Cllr Gordon McGlone
Ward: Cam East
I live very happily in Upper Cam (since September 1979). We have been allotmenteers since 1980. Our current Cam Parish allotments grow wonderful wildlife and some fruit, flowers and vegetables too. Our slow worms should be busy by now. I frequently Tweet about our little garden and allotment patches with the line 'that's why we love #Camalot'; corny but correct. Margaret and I are both keen gardeners; Margaret being a trained horticulturalist.
Since 2013 I have been a freelance consultant working with: Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, The Wildlife Trusts, Team Badger, University of Bath, Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner, CIEEM and most recently as interim Assistant Chief Executive for Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust. I am a trustee of Cotswold Water Park Trust.
I now want to give back to the lovely Parish of Cam a proper share of my energies and abilities. This is a very lovely place to which I have remained totally devoted despite working on UK things. Each time I return from a journey my reaction is 'Wow this is so beautiful'. After over 40 professional years fighting for nature at County, regional and U.K. levels I want to 'Bring wildlife Home'. Cam faces huge challenges; population growth, housing shortages, climate change, severely depleted biodiversity and a projection by the CEO of Environment Agency that at the current rate England will not be able to meet drinking water needs in only 25 years time. Nature enriches and supports our daily lives, we need it more than it needs us. At the current pace of environmental damage our future is not a very green one. Our children deserve better and are striking to tell us so.
Our lovely Parish has a sound heart and lovely people. That's why I really do love Cam a lot. I probably don't have 25 productive years left but I do hope to give Cam Parish Council a goodly share of my energy, experience and determination for better environmental and social justice.
