Heritage Assets Register

What is a Local Heritage Asset Register?

- A heritage asset as a building, monument, site, place, area or landscape identified as having a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions, because of its heritage interest

- A way for communities, neighbourhood plan-making bodies and local planning authorities to identify and celebrate and protect the historic buildings, places and spaces, archaeological sites and historic parks, gardens and other designed landscapes which enrich and enliven their area

- Local heritage lists provide a consistent and accountable way of identifying local heritage assets based on sound evidence and criteria

- Unlike Listed building designation, Local Listing is not a legislative control and does not determine whether planning permission is needed. However, when planning permission is required the 'special interest' of locally listed asset will be taken into account by planning officers when considering applications

Why have a register?

- The Local Heritage Listing is a means for a community and a local authority to jointly identify heritage assets that are valued as distinctive elements of the local historic environment.

- To raise awareness of an area's local heritage assets which are not formally recognised and their important role in defining the character of the town.

- To inform developers, owners, council officers and members of the public about buildings etc. within the parish boundary that are desirable to retain and protect.

- A way to identifying and conserving local heritage to try to stop local areas being at risk of being overlooked and losing their significance through alteration or in some cases complete demolition

- To help the council in its decision making when discussing proposals and determining planning applications.

How do you add to the register?

Volunteers, members of the Cam & Dursley Society and Cam Parish Council are in the process of completing nomination forms. These are then presented to Stroud District Council for final approval.

- Nomination forms are available below with an explanation of the nomination criteria
